Greiner Construction Builds New Merchant & Gould Offices to Reflect Law Firm's Image
September 2001, Minneapolis, MN - In partnership with architects Perkins & Will, Greiner Construction is overseeing construction of the new corporate headquarters of law firm Merchant & Gould in the downtown Minneapolis IDS Center. The project, scheduled for completion in September 2001, compliments the firm's "established-but-not-stodgy" image by incorporating both classic architectural elements and modern touches.
Greiner was brought in to manage reconstruction of the 90,000 square-foot area, which covers four floors of the landmark tower. "As one of the largest intellectual property attorneys in the country, Merchant & Gould wanted this space to reflect both its history of experience as well as its cutting-edge capabilities," said Wolfgang Greiner, president, Greiner Construction. "We're carrying out the architects' vision of marrying old and new elements to create a very contemporary look."
The office design was carefully planned to create a flexible work environment that meets the needs of today's changing workforce. It includes common work areas that give employees greater mobility to get work done without being tied to their desks. The furnishings will allow people to plug in their laptops virtually anywhere in the office.
In addition to such modern touches, Merchant & Gould's new office will retain a pre-existing three-story spiral staircase - the central feature of the space. The firm's library extends from the base of the staircase on the 30th floor. A lunchroom encircles the staircase on the 31st floor, with stunning views to the North. Topping the staircase on the 32nd floor, a barrel-vault ceiling connects the North and South sides of the building in the main reception area.
"This project encompasses a tremendous amount of high-end custom wood detailing," explains Kevin Rolfes, project architect, for Perkins & Will, "and we trust Greiner to see that our quality standards are upheld. They have a very good understanding of project goals. They have been an excellent partner in helping us complete the work on time, on schedule and on budget."
